Places for People receives 65% of its operating budget from the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH). Individuals, corporations and private foundations also contribute to the agency. These funds are used to meet the service needs and other programmatic costs that are unfunded by DMH or other funding sources. The Saint Louis Mental Health Board, a taxing entity, provides substantial funding for outreach, engagement and services for homeless clients.
Places for People is a 501(c)(3) qualified charitable organization.

Kresge Special Opportunities Initiative
In 2004, PfP, along with only six other organizations nationwide, was awarded a five-year multi-phase grant from The Kresge Foundation.
This Special Opportunities Initiative (SOI) is designed to develop a private base of support for annual operations by hiring a professional fund-raising staff and increasing donor support.
Funds from the SOI are specifically allocated to hiring staff, salaries, conducting board and staff training, and supporting other development costs.
If specific annual fund-raising goals are achieved, PfP receives bonus grants from the Kresge Foundation for general operating support.
