On average, people with severe and persistent mental illness will die 25 years earlier than the rest of the population. Preventable medical disorders are the cause of death in three out of five such cases—conditions that are frequently unmanaged. In response, Places for People coordinates all medical care for our clients, provides transportation to appointments as necessary, and offers on-site nursing and medication management services.
Many people who are homeless and have a mental illness receive no treatment and may resist offers of help because they don't recognize they are sick or are very fearful of others.Places for People dedicates staff and resources to provide homeless outreach to people who would benefit greatly from mental health services but who are unlikely to seek help.
Every day, Places for People receives hundreds of calls from people or families seeking help. We also partner with local police, hospitals, and the courts to address otherwise unmet mental health needs. With your support, PfP annually engages 1,500 people in services. Additionally, we provide resources, triage services, referrals and assessments to another 2,400 people.
Whether you are an individual who wants to help or a company looking to make a partnership, you can be sure your donations are always used efficiently, safely and effectively to help those in need.
Places for People's web video series, "Changing Perspectives: Stories of Hope, Health and Recovery," provides a glimpse into the lives of people living with mental illness and the people who have dedicated their careers to help.
