Mission

To provide innovative and effective mental health services to people in need while creating a system of care that promotes personal recovery.

Overview

Places for People was founded in 1972 to serve patients who were discharged from the St. Louis State Psychiatric Hospital during the process of deinstitutionalization, or downsizing. In 2011, Places for People merged with Community Alternatives, which was founded in 1995 when Missouri moved to privatize outpatient mental health care. The new agency, which retains the name "Places for People," offers all the services previously available at each agency separately and is positioned for further growth and success in a future with economic and service-delivery challenges.

Annually:

• Engage 1,510 people in ongoing program services
• Outreach nearly 259 people providing assessment, triage services and referrals to other service providers
• Touch nearly 2,100 people through intake calls and out in the community providing resource and referral assistance
• Total operating budget under $10 million

Funding Streams:

• 49% Service Revenue from State/Medicaid Contracts
• 37% Federal Grants
• 8% Private Unrestricted Grants and Fundraising (General Donations, Events)
• 5% Local Government Funding
• 1% Rental, Other and Interest Income

We Partner With:

• Families who have young children at-risk for behavioral health problems and who would benefit from parenting education and support
• Young adults with challenging behavioral health disorders, experiencing juvenile delinquency, truancy, and poor school performance
• Immigrants and refugees who are survivors of torture and trauma
• Adults with serious mental health disorders, frequently with co-occurring HIV/AIDS and addiction disorders
• People who are homeless and living with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders
