Once a resident of West Pine Group Home, Joyce returned to her former home this week to share an inspirational message about the value of meaningful employment.
“Sometimes I felt like quitting, but I didn’t. It was really hard, but I think I’m a tough girl,” she said. “I get right back up and try again.”
Joyce connected with Places for People when she moved to St. Louis from Mexico, MO, in 2011. Places for People’s Employment Services team has supported Joyce when she has sought employment, and while she has held jobs.
Places for People’s Employment Services program provides an evidence-based practice, Individual Placement and Support, to help people living with mental illness and substance use disorders earn and maintain competitive jobs.
Most recently, Joyce worked for three years for a receptionist at a healthcare provider.
“I just don’t like to sit at home and do nothing. I’m a very active person,” she said.
Joyce gave encouragement to those in attendance.
“If you guys are looking for a job, you’ll get one. If I can do it, then you can do it.”
